“I prefer drawing to talking. Drawing is faster and leaves less room for lies.” - Le Corbusier
Our story
“I’m Jonathan, founder of Baekson™. After more than two instructive decades working in corporate design as a designer, strategist and creative director in brand, product design, retail interiors and entertainment for numerous international organisations and having led a rather polymathic career, I come back full circle to the very activity which led to my career path: the timeless art of doodling, drawing and sketching.”
In a world increasingly defined by screens and constant technological engagement, working with one’s hands can seem like a luxury rather than a necessity. Yet the opposite feels true—it is a form of survival. Sketching allows us to reconnect with simplicity and immediacy, reminding us of the inherent power in this timeless practice, a practice that underpins all creative expression.
Born in Seoul, South Korea and raised in the NY/NJ area of the United States, Jonathan obtained a BFA from College for Creative Studies in Detroit, Michigan USA in Product/Transportation Design. Several years later, he attended the graduate program for Transportation Design at UID Umeå Universitet in Umeå, Sweden.
Since the early 2000’s, Jonathan has taught Sketch Technique to Industrial Design students at Konstfack, Sweden and continues to teach the same at IKDC Lund University for both Bachelor and Masters levels. While his foundational education is formally rooted in industrial design discipline, Jonathan’s style reflect a diverse range of influences from figure drawing, sculpture, architectural illustrations, abstract expressionism to comic art.
“Drawing slows everything down and forces you to see. To truly take in the world around us. To notice what’s in front of you instead of skimming past it. It’s one of the most direct ways we have to think and make sense of things. Not just to make images, but to understand what we’re seeing. Sketching has always been part of how people work through ideas—it’s quick, immediate, and doesn’t need to be finished to be useful. I’ve been drawing for as long as I can remember. It’s shaped how I see and how I work.”
Baekson™ comes out of that.
It’s a place to draw, to look more carefully, and to get back to something simple that still matters.
“My technique is about applying gestural sketching used for figurative drawing to everything else.” - Jonathan F. Kim
